ONES TO WATCH BY GARY WASSNER

DIOTIMA

It’s refreshing to see a collection that has no interest in trends. The pieces designed by Rachel Scott for Diotima, founded in 2021, are all unique and artisanal. The crochet pieces making up the bulk of the collection are all hand made in Jamaica. They exemplify the unique skills needed to execute in such an impeccable manner. Mixed with tailored style, many of which are constructed out of Italian fabrics, the pairings are unique. Textured and easy, they exude comfort, but they do not lack style.

Amazing crochet work, Hand embroidered cottons, beaded separates, tailored shirts and pleated pants combine to create a noteworthy ensemble of distinctive outfits. Anyone can wear them. They aren’t restrictive in any way, but rather free and multi-generational. Some collections seem so focused on one age group or one body type, one aesthetic. Diotima is not. Its consumer reach is broad and universal. Depending upon how the consumer wants to pair the pieces, or drape them over other items, the looks can become very personal. This is clothing that can be worn in so many ways and for so many different occasions. It can be dressed up or down. The versatility bestows upon it a special category all its own.

As Diotima evolves, I’m anxious to see how far Rachel Scott can take this brand. The fundamentals of it are compelling. And, the dedication to true craft is both beautiful and admirable. I’m excited to follow this brand as it grows and as the designer spreads her wings. I sense that there is so much more that will be done with this collection as time passes. Certainly, one to watch.
